Hello and welcome! It's my pleasure to be hosting the July 2018 Vinyl Challenge. Rules: Have fun! Be creative. Don't play an album that's already been chosen by someone else for that day's theme. Don't play the same album for more than one challenge. Feel free to join in at any time during the month or come back if life keeps you away for a few days. There will be a prize for a randomly selected individual who completes the entire month without missing a day (including any make-up days). Challenges: Day 1 - O Canada! It's Canada Day, eh. Celebrate by spinning something from a Canadian artist/band. (requested by @Nebula_Rising) Day 2 - Inspired by a book. List or post a picture of your favorite book (or a book you are currently reading) and post an album that is related to it in some way. Day 3 - Soundtrack your life. A big time Hollywood studio is producing a movie based on your life. Post an album which includes a song that they have to include on the soundtrack. Tell us which song it is. Day 4 - Independence Day. To commemorate the day Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum saved us from being annihilated by invading telepathic aliens, listen to something celebrating independence (something from an "indie" artist, perhaps?). Day 5 - So nice, you bought it twice. Post a record you have multiples of (perhaps multiple variants, or an original/reissue, or just because?). If you don't have any multiples, post something you'd like a second copy of. Day 6 - Wish you were (still) here. Listen to a record from a band that is no longer together (but you wish they were). Day 7 - VMP Spins at your house. You've volunteered to host VMP Spins at your house (thanks for the invite! We'll try not to break anything). What album are you going to spin to "show off" how unique your vinyl collection is? Day 8 - Breakfast in bed. Spin a record you'd listen to while having breakfast in bed. Bonus points for actually listening to the record while having breakfast in bed. Day 9 - Zombie apocalypse! You are being forced to evacuate your home due to the impending zombie apocalypse. You've got all your essentials packed and have enough room in your bag for one record. Which one are you taking? Day 10 - VMP should do an exclusive from… Post an album from an artist you wish VMP would release an exclusive from (doesn't have to be the same album as the one you're posting, but it can be). Day 11 - Voyager 3. NASA has heard about your great taste in music and has reached out asking you to help select a song for a third Voyager Golden Record. What record are you going to send them and which song are they going to include from it? Day 12 - Celebrate women. Post an album from a woman artist or a woman-led band. Day 13 - National French Fry Day. Listen to a guilty pleasure. Day 14 - So many reissues, so little time. With the whole vinyl resurgence currently going on, lots of companies are capitalizing by reissuing their older catalogue. Listen to a favorite recent reissue. Day 15 - Dancing in the rain. Post an album you'd like to dance in the rain to (obligatory Darwin Awards warning: don't actually take your record player out in the rain and plug it in. Duh.). Day 16 - @lee newman To quote @Juiceless the last time we did a similar challenge highlighting a different member: "You gotta get to the essence of [him]!" If you need inspiration (or just want to be a creeper), @lee newman's discogs and last.fm. (borrowed from @Joyless Division's April challenge) Day 17 - From heaven. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison are taking a vacation from heaven and they've decided to hang out with you for a day. They show up on your doorstep and want to hear some modern music. What's the first album you're going to play for them? Day 18 - Favorite recording package. Post a picture of a record that has interesting/unique or just your favorite record packaging. Day 19 - Support your local record store. Post an album you bought from your local. Day 20 - Future essential listening. Listen to a record released in the past five years that you think will be considered essential listening twenty years from now. Day 21 - Mismatched. Spin a record where the vinyl color(s) don't match the album artwork (or you think could have been better) and suggest alternative vinyl color(s). Day 22 - Multicultural/multiethnic. We're living in an increasing multicultural and multiethnic world. Post an album from a multiethnic artist or a band with members from more than one ethnicity and/or culture. Day 23 - Homegrown. Listen to an album from a local artist/band (as close to local as you can get). Day 24 - It's a live one. Spin a record from an artist/band you haven't seen live yet but would like to. Day 25 - That's an awful band name. Post a record from a band who you think has an awful band name and suggest a new one. Day 26 - 365 days. Dust off an album you haven't listened to in the past year (or more). Day 27 - Nostalgia. Listen to an album that reminds you of your childhood. Day 28 - Walk-up music. You've been asked to throw out the opening pitch for your local baseball team (or any baseball team if one isn't local to you). What record are you bringing for them to play as you walk up to the mound (and which song should they queue up)? Inspired by @Aron's What Is Your Walk-Up Music thread. Day 29 - Sunday playlist. Create a vinyl stack (minimum of five records) centered around a theme of your choice. You don't have to listen to them all but you should spin at least one record from your stack. Day 30 - National Mutt Day. Post a picture of your pet (or favorite animal) and the album you would play for them. (borrowed from @Joyless Division's April Challenge) Day 31 - New music. Post an album you've received in July. edit: formatting.
