I love Patti Smith. I think my favorite live experience is still when she returned to Austin for the first time in forever. She played a free outdoor show on St. Patrick's Day at Waterloo Park during SXSW. Alejandro Escovedo opened.

Al wore brown leather pants and a cowboy hat, and he and his band were an absolute perfect choice to open that show. They rocked, and then they also had the Tosca strings on a few songs.

Patti had only recently started playing shows again after taking a good chunk of the 80's and most of the 90's off from the music business. She was this amazing mixture of charm, angst, hope and poetry. She played the song 'Gung Ho', which hadn't been released yet.

I think they started the tune, and she had the band re-start it. It is a song referencing Vietnam, and, as if on cue, a helicopter from a nearby hospital flew by as the song re-started. A weird coincidence that added some extra drama to the performance. Perfect performances that night.
