I'm new to this, but The Record Lounge in Lansing seemed nice enough? Very small shop, but the owner was friendly, and I definitely saw records that I liked.

I dropped in there a couple weeks ago. It's in REO Town. Really nice selection, but prices are asking double what I've seen at other places. Like @Tokyo Banana said though, nice owner, so I grabbed a couple things and she honored a 20% coupon I had from Yelp, and threw in a free canvas bag that I could continue to bring back for 10% off each time after that.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out next time I'm over there.

The Record Lounge mentioned that there will be some sales coming up. yesterday was a "flash" sale of 25% anything over $10. Also they are looking for recommendations for Record Store Day orders. They do a lot of their communications via Facebook FYI.

Thanks! I follow a few of the local shops they're all gearing up for RSD.

So where do all you fellow Michiganders go for RSD? My buddy and I have chosen a different starting point each year we've gone.

I think this year might be Street Corner Music in Oak Park. We went there on our third stop last year and even at 1 pm or so they still had a lot of nice titles.
We started at Melodies and Memories last year, that place is a blast to spend some time in...and huge.

I live near Found Sound, so likely there. If I'm in Lansing that day.. The Record Lounge. This would be my first one.

I'm not sure yet but I'll probably avoid the "popular" places like Dearborn and UHF because they'll be a madhouse. I may try some smaller random shops and see what happens.

I started at Dearborn Music one year and we got in pretty quick and I got stuff high on my list, (Hoist and Los Alamos Grind among others) the check-out line was insane though. The year we started at UHF they waited til we got to the door after like an hour in line to announce they didn't get many RSD titles.

I really like Found Sound, great store. Flipside in Clawson is yet another good stop too.

The guy at flip side has these giant dogs that are super friendly. They're literally the only reason I buy from him.

Went to RPM in Traverse City today for the first time. It was awesome. Great selection of new and quality used in every genre and solid prices. It almost got to the point where I had to ask what they DIDN’T have. A must if you’re ever up in that area.

That’s a dangerous place for the wallet.

Especially if you work only a block away, which I did for quite some time!

I was just in Traverse City and went to RPM Records, that was the 4th or 5th time I've been there. Huge selection, and I always find stuff on my list. I had to make myself leave before I spent 200 bucks. Highly recommended.

Yep. That place is awesome. It’s hard to not spend and spend especially when you’re just in town for a visit.

Exactly. I had that vacation vibe going, which means; I can spend a little extra here today.

I just found this thread while researching for a Michigan record store road trip my girlfriend and I are doing next weekend and it's been super helpful. We're hitting up Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Holland for sure. We might do Lansing, but—

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with The Vinyl Record Bank in Frankenmuth and if it's worth skipping Lansing for. My parents stumbled across it on a trip of their own and found some incredible things there, but just wondering how it compares to what I'd find in Lansing (particularly The Record Lounge—we'll be there on a Sunday when FBC seems to be closed).

Also if there are any other recommendations anywhere I'd appreciate it! I love a place with a great selection of obscure/hard-to-find 80s stuff and also world music. Basically wherever I'm most likely to find a copy of "Hats" by The Blue Nile and/or some 80s African pop.

Stores in MI that I'm familiar with and enjoy:
    1. Ann Arbor - Encore Records and Underground Sounds. U.S. is my favorite record store in the state. Both of these will be worth your time.
    2. Royal Oak/Ferndale - UHF (RO) and Found Sound (Ferndale). Both in suburbs of Detroit and are nice stops if you want a good variety, especially Found Sound.
    3. Detroit proper - Third Man Records. You can sign up for tours of the pressing plant on the weekends in advance.
    4. Grand Rapids - Vertigo Music.

Hope this is of some use to you!
