Catching up on some classics- I just got this a couple weeks ago and have only had the chance to spin it once! Love it so far.

    Day 11

Those no good have to make a buck but why does it have to start on a Monday but wait this is my fourth day and I got three more to go and it’s the middle of evaluation season blues.

I have testified many times that when I came to this here Club and forum three years ago (we’re less than a month away @Colonel_Angus learn how to round up) I was pretty uneducated on the blues. I knew the big hitters but not even them very well. The club’s spot on curation and folks like @Mr Moore @HiFi Guy and @Yer Ol' Uncle D have made it so that the old cogs says I have 74 blues records (I’m not sure I agree given some of the things I saw when I filtered that way). I thank them all for opening up a genre that I’d not really gotten into and giving me enough knowledge to stumble across things like this gem from 2017 all on my own.

Feb 12 - Today is Darwin's birthday. Play an album that convinced you to like a different genre of music, or a different artist.

This is why I joined VMP, to be introduced to new artists/genres I wouldn't think of seeking out.
This was my introduction to psychedelia from Asia.

I'm not sure if it was this album exactly (it was probably The Money Store to be honest), but Death Grips really opened the door for me to a bunch of other experimental, weird, and challenging artists and genres.

Oh, wait... that that must have been too easy ;)

This was one of the first VMP extra exclusives I purchased, and it helped me appreciate world music, specifically African music. And thanks to @Eriatarka 's recommendation, I will have one more with Ofege in my next box :)

    Day 12 - Darwin’s Birthday

My introduction to shoegaze. Today, I love pretty much anything with droning guitars, but I hated it at first except for this record.

This made my day, Dude. Hope you enjoy it!
I love Fela and I wish I could’ve gotten this VMP exclusive but it was released a couple days before I joined and I didn’t know about it until it was gone

Animal Collective - Here Comes The Indian

This was the first Animal Collective record I ever heard and it was love at first listen. This paved the way for experimental music for me

Kamasi Washington - Harmony of Difference

I still wouldn't say I'm a big jazz fan, but I am gradually listening to it a lot more, and most of that has to do with this bite-size Kamasi record.

I have had a long think about this one and decided to go for something obscure.

    William Onyeabor - Atomic Bomb.

    IMG_2434.JPG

This album introduced me to African Funk, Highlife, Afrobeat etc. Hes a fantastic artist with an equally fantastic backstory and catalog of work. I have a ton of records by different artists due to first hearing William Onyeabor, but for the sake of this post I have included my current William Onyeabor collection.

    Semi scooped but not really.

Day 12 - Broadening Your Taste

Had it not been the FELA! chants years ago, I *likely* never would've checked him out. This is the first album of his I listened to and it has really opened up the musical palette for me since.

Fela Kuti / Africa '70 / Ginger Baker - Live

    20190210_213516_Richtone(HDR).jpg

"After Fela and his band returned to Nigeria, the group was renamed The Afrika '70, as lyrical themes changed from love to social issues. He formed the Kalakuta Republic, a commune, a recording studio, and a home for the many people connected to the band that he later declared independent from the Nigerian state. According to Lindsay Barrett, the name "Kalakuta" derived from the infamous Black Hole of Calcutta dungeon in India. Fela set up a nightclub in the Empire Hotel, first named the Afro-Spot and later the Afrika Shrine, where he both performed regularly and officiated at personalized Yoruba traditional ceremonies in honour of his nation's ancestral faith. He also changed his name to Anikulapo (meaning "He who carries death in his pouch", with the interpretation: "I will be the master of my own destiny and will decide when it is time for death to take me").He stopped using the hyphenated surname "Ransome" because it was a slave name."
