Black2 sounds a bit fuller and little more bass to me ? Might be worth upgrading the stylus for $50 at some point.

I Wish U-Turn audio would start offering the newer Black2 on their turntables.

I asked Ben about this last month he said there were some issues with the Black2, but did not elaborate. If that was with mounting on a Orbit or it was on Grado's end I'm not sure. Someone should follow up if they have a chance.

The theory I'm going with is that they have Black 1's still in stock. I'm sure they bought in bulk and don't want to lose on that investment. Nothing wrong with that, but I think they should just say they're not offering the v2 at the moment and be done with it....there is nothing wrong with the v2's to the best of my knowledge and from what I've heard.

@lee newman can chime in as well ;)

I’ve had a black2 for 7 months. It destroys the Ortofon Om5e I was using before. Not one problem to date. I’d bank on @AnthonyI ’s explanation and it makes me think less of Orbit.

The styli are the same between the two. The bodies are different as the the measured resistance between the two are quite different.

The upgrade from a 1 to a 2 is minor at best. What I'd do is fit your cartridge with the far superior 8MZ stylus and call it a day.

Thanks for the message. We did a Black2 soft launch, but ran into some manufacturing issues. We are working with Grado to make the Black2 available on the Orbit in the future.

Re Anthonyl's comment: I hate to debunk a good theory, but we usually don't purchase a truckload of a single part all at once - especially for high ticket items like cartridges. We place blanket orders, which get us bulk pricing with smaller shipments at regular intervals. Holding off on shipping the Black2 is not related to excessive Black1 inventory.

So you see Lee, now you go against the Uturn grain twice! Using a Black2 and the Michell clamp :D

Still, might be worthwhile for you to ask Ben what the exact manufacturing issue is seeing you have one installed.

I’m thinking about it as well as mentioning that I’ve been using the clamp for close to two years with only minimal effect on the spindle. I don’t think I would suggest it to users wide, because overtightening can definitely be a thing and I think that might cause substantative damage. I’d also like to get his thoughts on why they didn’t build the acrylic platter thick enough to run naked and ask if a metal spindle is a possibility in the future.

I wish I had had the opportunity when I had my Orbit to give the 8MZ a go, just to hear for myself.........maybe when the "secondary" table comes along ;)

lol, completely forgot........so, that being said, the secondary table will have a Grado Gold with the 8MZ once the stylus needs replacing :D

On a side note.......it sounded fantastic

They'd have to do three things to make a correct naked platter, all of which would mean machining a new platter:

    3 mm taller

    Label area recess

Smaller diameter so the ridge at the edge isn't supported by the platter.
In other words, the lip at the edge would sit free of the platter. Along
with the label area recess, this would allow the record to lay entirely
flat on the platter. Just the way MoFi did it. ;)

Honestly, this would be a huge selling point or option in my opinion.

We've become spoiled by and accustomed to how well thought out the MoFi decks are.

...on a side note for those paying attention, this is why I really liked the Acrylic mat on my Orbit ;)
