@Ed Selley hasn't been around in a while, I wonder what he’d recommend nowadays.
Also kind of curious on this. Still pondering getting a DAC upgrade for my old Sony SACD player. Had been looking at the Musical Fidelity MX-DAC (because of how impressed I’ve been with the MX-VNYL phono) but it really is an area I’m blind on.
I'm not really a digital guy. I have an Emotiva that we mostly use for TV/movies.
I'd look towards Schiit if I were in the market. There's also a ton of choices on Massdrop. If I were going to drop serious money (which I will for vinyl but won't for digital) Wyred 4 Sound would be top of the list.
Sorry- lost to a world of divorce and (ironically) digital. The latter is because I now do support and consultancy for Chord Electronics. As such I imagine you don't need to guess where my preferences would lie in that particular selection...
I'm using a Cambridge DAC MAGIC 100. It has served me well for over 4 years. Schiit also make decent products too.
The Chord DAC’s @Ed Selley mentions are fantastic. At lower price points I’ve owned and loved the Schiit Modi Multibit, Rega DAC-R and Mytek Liberty. They each have a different flavor to them, the Rega being closest to an analog front end and the Mytek being the cleanest and most detailed.
I would love to get the Rega DAc but it''s beyond my price point. Everything else in my setup is Rega, TT, amp, speakers.
If you don’t need the USB this is still a solid DAC.
