Yeah look, I don't have a dog in this fight. I don't have the album and am not familiar with the artist or his work. But my first reaction was to be uncomfortable reading it, and my second was "this shit is offensive." It's written as if the artist is the one authoring it, but he's not. I totally agree with @jaycee and @Enoch @ThePakoBuelna it sounds like a white frat boy imitating a southern black artist. It's bad, and it shouldn't have ever made it past the planning stage. I'm my opinion.

As of 4 days ago I decided to ditch the VMP obi strips. I had all the RHH all together at the end of my hip hop collection and then I decided that was dumb and ditched the strips and now everything is where it belongs and looks better.

A writer of color wrote the OBI (a black rapper, at that), and we thought it was a fun way to honor the legacy of the album--the Ha flow is present in a lot of rap music--and if you read the OBI, he mentions a variety of things about the album within there. You can not like it--which is your opinion--but anything beyond that is taking things out of context.

Thanks for clarifying a bit. I still don't like it, but at least it doesn't seem as offensive now. It's still not good though. Plays like an inside joke. As mentioned earlier.

It's not offensive, you just don't like it. Which is fine.

And it literally is an inside joke. We apparently overestimated people's ability to recognize the "Ha" flow, which is fair feedback.

Naw, I got the Ha! flow thing. Even without knowing Juvenile I figured it was his thing. To clarify what irked me was the way the obi was written as if by Juvenile himself, and that to me is a really slippery slope to go down when you appear to be speaking as the artist. Especially due to the nature of the text in this case. The fact that the author is black is certainly better than a white author writing it but it still feels wrong to me. But again, just my opinion. I like that you guys try different stuff, I just didn't think this one worked.

Telling people what they can and can’t be offended by is well... offensive.

You can not like that people are offering some constructive criticism and I get that but maybe it might be more productive to consider the point that your inside joke isn’t a useful thing to relay to your customers on the faux-bi

I mean, I guess I should have anticipated it more than I did.

I hear where you guys are coming from re: not liking the inside joke, but when we do left-field things like this on an obi it's not going to satisfy everyone. We've had a lot of people think it was funny, or better than just a little paragraph (which some people say is dumb too!). Your votes in the nay column have been duly counted.

It’s fine. It’s trying something different. I’m not an obi fan overall but the writer did ok getting me to read it to the end. I guess it’s hard to put something meaningful and full of deep insight into as few words.

And it only gets tougher when you've done 40 of them or whatever, which is why we tried this.

Appreciate VMP trying new things. And I think it’s in the spirit of the piece. It wouldn’t work with Veedon Fleece though... let me write it.
