something can still be stereotypical even if the person making it is in the stereotyped group, but I am with @Mather probably would have been better had there been a credit on it

I actually really liked the OBI Strip because it just kept on enticing me. Every question made me go “mmm yes, I do want Juvi when he was at his best on vinyl” “mmm yes, give me some ghetto insight”

I was like “give me those rhymers”.....then when I heard the next sentence ending with ‘Big Tymers’, I was like “Alright Alright Alright Alright” like how the guy chants it in the background of Cardi B’s “Bickenhead” - because I thought that bar was cute and fresh.

I found this OBI Strip really playful and fun and funny yet seducing. And I really like all those qualities so I enjoyed reading the strip :barefoot::):coffee:

I'm not really going to keep litigating this, but I would think long and hard about this statement when you yourself are not from the group allegedly being stereotyped.

Just to be clear, and sorry if this wasn't clear in my original post about this, my comment wasn't about the joke, it's with what imo are the tropes that are presented and how it read (it read differently if you're in on the joke). Call it opinion, personal preference, or whatever, but as you, Michael, and any follower and lover of hip-hop music and culture knows there's a lot more to it than the tropes, even if the "struggle" is real.

Every chance you have to communicate to people the importance of the music and culture is an opportunity. Particularly when so much of the industry was and remains dismissive of black art... even more true in '98. Many people have ignored the importance of New Orleans hip-hop over the years (even as Wayne blew-up) and obviously that's not what was intended here, but when I read everyone of those "ha"s the silliness read as dismissive.

BTW - I was expecting a nice try here. I’m taking this as confirmation and running. Scooby Doo will only write a rap obi if it’s a ruff house release.

I saw a dog that looked just like Scooby Doo last week. I was honestly more amazed by that than if a puppy approached me who could talk. Scrappy has to try harder in order to make an impression.

I hear you on this, and is something we can keep in mind. We do a lot of work on the VMP website proper to place this music in its context, and thought that was clear in this obi, but it missed for some people.

It was funny how an out of context joke can make the guess thread over there go nuts. No one man can have all that power.

You’re not surprised because you know I’m a ponyboy that likes to play & destroy but ends up getting treated like a toy by an incidental boogie who’s rude & appreciates power :giggle::p:sneaky:

so your response is to stereotype the people that thought it might be problematic?

I personally didn't find it offensive or stereotyping or anything at all. But can we leave that "snowflake" shit alone? The people who constantly complain about SJWs and snowflakes and easily offended millennials are ten times more annoying than any of the groups they ever complain about.

Seems to me Scrappy had a Meowth-esque upbringing of class struggle, appropriation, and false bravado.

Just dropping in to see if anyone has made an Obi-Wan and Han Solo joke yet because I think there’s enough material there to work something out thanks

I had to read that line several times to make sure I was still following the same conversation.

The Last Jedi had a more flimsy plotline than this so I think you're onto something.
