You gonna e-mail info for another replacement? I already reached out yesterday. (You should)
I did. It’s clear there was a bad batch, or a worn plate, or something. It’s way outside the standard I expect from VMP.
It's that patented GZ "Beach House" crackle, I first had it on Sabbath, then Beach House and numerous others. I'm not sure what GZ is doing to cause this to happen with so many releases. I guess it could be a worn plate as you said, actually the more I think about it the more that makes sense. I don't know that I've had that crackle issue on any of the very limited run vinyl they've put out. My Idles and Kidjo are both flat and sound perfect. I'd actually love to see a breakdown of how many of these warping and crackle issues are taking place on very large runs like "Essentials" vs the limited run titles with less than 500 copies. I suppose it would be skewed by the different sample sizes, but I'm almost positive I haven't had nearly as many issues with the limited run stuff from them...
Yeah, both Blossom Dearie and the Becky and the Birds EP (ltd to 500) I got this month sound excellent.
Essentials has been a real crapshoot for me lately, though.
My Blossom is a fish bowl but it sounds good, when flattened. But I put those classics warping issues down as much to the booklets inside the jacket causing issues as I do GZ warping everything.
I don't really have any warp issues with Classics, but I'm sure whatever endemic problems you have with your shipments are probably exacerbated by the booklet placement.
I've given up trying to figure out it out. I'm just glad that Kidjo is dead flat and sounds amazing.
@kvetcha You hear anything back from info@ yet?
I had warping with Koko but pretty much everything else has been flat.
I don't think there's a flat copy of Koko out there.
AND IF YOU HAVE A FLAT ONE I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT LET ME LIVE ON IN IGNORANCE PLEASE THANK YOU
I have not.
I think they're on about 5 business day backlog right now, possibly 6 or 7. I've got one in for Dearie as well.
Just joined to say my copy of ANATO is terribly noisy as well--really bad halfway through side B. I've emailed @info and we'll see what they say.
It's been 8 days and I still haven't heard back from @info. :/
FWIW, I think they're still digging out of December. I had a lot of issues (I ordered 4 things on the Black Friday sale, and 2 eventually got cancelled / never showed up, and I also had issues with my Muddy Waters record), and in one of the replies the agent said this:
"Yeah, December was a tough month for us but we are working hard to make sure issues like this don't happen in the future."
My confidence is a little bit shaken right now, but I'm hanging in there and rooting for them...
Oh, here's another thing that is worth noting:
“The general thing we find is that, the more colors you mix together, the more likely you are to have random noises”
From Does the Color of a Vinyl Record Affect the Sound Quality?
This album looks bitchin', for sure, but I'd much prefer the consistency that comes from a single color.
I mean, there's moderate surface noise from vinyl formulation and then there's...this. It sounds worse than picture discs I've had.
I think I must’ve been one of the lucky few as my copy has damn near zero surface noise, there’s a light crackle between a few songs on side B but otherwise it’s flawless.
It’s unfortunate to hear about all these noisy copies.
If my other copy of this album wasn't also noisey I'd be more bothered by it, but the two are right about equal. Not great, but acceptable.
It’s bad enough on both mine that it basically drowns out Mercury’s intro vocals in Bohemian Rhapsody.
