The Rega P8 has officially been announced. It doesn't look like a massively radical design change, but has some very clear differences from the old one. Using the same PSU as the P6, which I think is a good call. Ditching the traditional plinth overlay and cover should cause some discussion. So let's hear it, what does everyone think?

I'm not feeling it, especially at what it's likely to cost.

I can appreciate taking the artistic approach to design, there are a few TT that fit into that category that I quite like, but the price tags are a bit out of reach for me. I'm sure technically it's a wonderful piece of equipment, aesthetically, I'm not feeling it and I'm sure the cover and the fact I like a more "Traditional" design isn't helping much. I'm sure it will find it's market amid praise and negativity ;)

I can appreciate the aesthetic and kind of like it. The cover is a bit weird, but again I appreciate the thought that went into the design. Wouldn’t spend that kind of money on it, but I don’t mind it at all and I’m sure it’ll sound pretty good, if not really good.

You better shop for furniture at Design Within Reach though or it’ll look out of place with the rest of your room.

Our price here will be :eek: by the time the US Distributor is finished with it. Regas are fairly priced in the U.K., not so here.

Apparently I’m an outlier here, but I dig the hell out of it. I have two systems, one with a highly modded Rega P3, which now I’m debating parting out for this.

On my P3 I just take the dust cover off while listening, so that doesn’t matter to me, I love the design, and a Prime won’t fit on the wall shelf (or where the wall shelf even is) anyway.

I certainly don't mind the look or the single piece dust cover. It's an interesting table and I'm sure with the right components it sounds exceptional. I am still a little surprised at the fixed tone arm height at this level. I would really only be fully confident in pairing with Rega carts, because in my mind the spacers just remove too much precision and take away from the ridged story.

Plus they have one line in the marketing that seems lazy and is driving me insane that they allowed it.
"The outer frame of the previous model has now been removed and a new stylish, removable, single piece dustcover has been introduced further reducing the overall mass of the turntable."

Umm, the RP8's plinth and dust cover is completely decoupled, and therefore has zero effect on total mass of the playback device. So WTF? Anyway... maybe I'm missing something. Moving on.

I'd still love to hear a P8/Apheta 2/Aria Phono combo. I'm not sure I'd go that way at the $6K+ price tag, but I'd certainly have it on my list if I was auditioning at that price point.

I think you always need to take marketing verbiage with a grain of salt ;)

They didn't even finish the edges of the plinth. All I see is a Nerf football.

I guess because I'm also in marketing makes this just sloppy for me. Like if I saw that go out I'd have someone on the phone right away saying "do you really think people buying a TT on this level WOULDN'T notice that?!?!"
Probably written by an outside agency, I'd imagine Rega staff would know better.

Like there's over selling, there's bending the truth, and then there are things that just aren't true AND contradictory of the RP8 marketing.

I think it’s pretty but that’s not really what I’m looking for in a table.

If I go this route and replace my “FrankenRega” I’d probably go with the Ania cartridge, and that system already has a Rega Aria in it. You’d hope system synergy would be good.

I’m curious if this will be anywhere at this weekends RMAF? If so, I’ll report back with my impressions.
