Still kinda up in the air, but possibly a high powered tube power amp and tube preamp. Or a tube preamp and high powered solid state power amp. Probably the first option though.

If there's no interest, I might get the high powered tube power amp and repurpose the Rugue as the preamp. For now.

I'm thinking Cary Audio or Prima Luna, or a combo of the two.

Hopefully someone will jump on this. It's certainly a killer deal. I'd consider it if I was anywhere near ready to jump on it.

That’s me. I would have totally been on this instead when I was buying my Sphinx. Now I’ve got so much other stuff going on I just can justify it, though I wish I could.

Though that makes me wonder, @HiFi Guy, how does the onboard phono compare to my iPhono 2? Selling both would get me real close to your asking price.

I'll let HiFi speak for himself... but I think he originally ran the iPhono with this amp?
Anyhow, I'll just put this out there. I challenge you to find this amp, shipped at this price, with or without updated (possibly upgraded?) tubes. Not saying this price is unheard of, it might not be. But I think you'd be waiting a very long time to see it at this price again.

Oh, I know. It’s an amazing deal. That’s why I’m frantically trying to figure out how to make it work.

    Upgraded tubes (Gold Lion 12AU7)

The iPhono 2 is clearly better.

I'm strongly leaning towards keeping it and repurposing it as a preamp. It'll push off the preamp upgrade so I can space this out. I'm looking at about $6500 combined minus the Pharoah.

If I sell the Pharoah, I'd end up buying a "placeholder" preamp, keeping it for a bit, and selling it when I decide which of the two preamps I want to keep very long term. Might as well keep the Pharoah and use that as a preamp for a bit.

I was about to jump in as @Chucktshoes' pusher and tell him to jump on this and just make due with the internal phono while saving up for a phono upgrade instead of saving up for an amp upgrade.

But honestly, with a Sphinx already in the system I don't think it's really necessary. Not saying the Pharaoh isn't an upgrade from the Sphinx, I'd assume it is. But it's probably not the best use of resources in his case.

If someone jumps on this, great. If not, I'll still be excited to hear which amp you end up with and how it compares. It sounds like you're on yet another fun journey @HiFi Guy!

Well, if you keep the pharaoh for the time being, hit me up later on when you’re ready. I’ll probably be interested.

As I understand it, Cary does final assembly in North Carolina, but a lot of the sub assemblies are made in the Far East.

PL gets parts from all over (Germany, Switzerland, Japan, France, etc) and does final assembly in China.

Honestly, I don't see much of a difference overall.

The initial idea was a Cary SLP-98L preamp and the SA-200.2 ES power amp.....

Then I got to looking at PL and really like the Dialogue HP power amp....

    Decisions, decisions.....
