I noticed our PrimaLuna thread has really started transforming into an all things tube thread, so I figured we could start one of those as a more general thing. So share your love for those little glowing glass cylinders.

Share your gear. Share your input. Amps, Pre-amps, headphone amps, phono pre-amps, gear you have, gear you lust after. Let's see ALL the tubes!

Ask about tube rolling, where to source tubes, maintenance, compatibility, whatever you want. Go crazy.

I'll kick this off with my love for two types of tubes that have stood out to me early in my journey.
#1 is the EL34. Mostly because it's the one most of us start with. It generally has that sweet mid range, they are accessible, and they have loads on the market so they are easy to roll for relatively affordable prices.
#2 is the 845. This tube is huge, not high power, and annoyingly expensive. But I have noticed it stands out to me every time I hear an amp with one. I can't really place what it is yet, so I'll just say balanced. I've only heard a few to date, but every single time it stands out in my mind.

I’ll come in! Coat, Hat and Shoes off, feet under the table...

I have my pair of Quad QII Forties!

    2E6ECC64-12CA-4763-A76C-352DECCD5DFF.jpeg

Each of the mono amps contains

2x KT88 currently the standard quads (GLs in the in the post :))
1x 5U4G Svetlana Winged C rectifier (just rolled to it yesterday)
    2x Ken Rad 6SH7

Loving the tube sound so far and can’t wait to get the new tubes burnt in! Also bonus, my radiators don’t need to be on as much...

Do you ever feel like you need more ventilation, or do your tubes not get that hot?

    My tubes get HOTHOTHOT

I was worried to begin with but @HiFi Guy told me it wasn’t an issue so I’ve not got that exercised about it since!

As far as tube vendors, I really like

    https://www.tubedepot.com

Great quality, fair prices, fast shipping.

Don't be in a rush though. Watch their site every day until the tubes you want go on sale. Their 24 hour sales are on the home page. If they run out, they will honor sale prices when they get replacement stock.

Sphinx V2 is in the tube world. Maybe you just need to do some more rollin'!

I've surely considered it. Dunno how much of a difference it makes with the Sphinx, though.

I don’t really have the vocabulary to describe the sound difference, but I swapped the stock tubes for Genelax Gold Lions in my Sphinx V2 and there was definitely a noticeable difference, and I liked it better.

I think the Sphinx has the tubes on the input stage? If that's correct, I also think that's believed to have the largest impact on the sound.
I'm making some bold statements as a somewhat amateur here, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Either way, I seem to recall people other than @Chucktshoes rolling tube in the Sphinx. Could be worth a shot, especially if you just need to scratch an update/tinker itch.

Tubes are in the line/preamp stage. The power amp is Hypex Class D solid state.

It's tempting to tube roll, but naturally all the most interesting options are $100-200/ea. Seems like a lot just to tinker.

Yeah, $100-200 certainly isn't anything to sneeze at. But if you're only passively considering, you can always passively keep your eyes out for discounts, sales, swaps/used, etc.

It's all a journey. No need to rush it.
