I'm curious at what volume folks here typically listen to their systems. I recently found, to my surprise, that an inexpensive 3.5w tube amp was enough to power my system to comfortable listening levels. Picked up an iPhone spl meter to actually get some numbers and discovered that, at my listening position, I'm rarely exceeding 85db (A weighted), and averaging something closer to 60-70 db depending on the music. Which is, uh, less than I expected.

Could I check this with something like an app on my phone? I would bet I'm somewhere in the 60dB range, but when a good song comes on and I'm home alone I'll wager I'm in the 75dB range.

Yeah, there are apps both free and paid to measure spl. I believe testing showed they're within +/- 2db of a professional spl meter when using the built-in mic, and closer to +/- 1db when using an external mic.

I was just kidding with the Spinal Tap reference. I’d actually like to know. I’ll try one of those apps!

When I've got the house to myself and want to rock out- usually a lot less though:

Sitting here using a phone app saying I'm listening at about 50dB. I guess I buy that. Trying to keep things quiet.

My room is 38dB with the system on but no A/C running. You are certainly listening quietly. This is more representative of my normal level when home alone.

I have now idea how to read that gauge. Hopefully that's not 120dB?

This was “Confessions” of badbadnotgood’s album III at a volume I’d consider ‘correct’ for the record. Ambient level is about 34db.

Looks to be normalized to a little over 90db.

The loudest musical peak I've hit tonight was 91.7 dB- at the time I did the screen shot it was 70.6 dB.

Is this an app stylized to look like a real gauge? Cause it sure fooled me. I was looking at the needle like huh?

I seam to listen around 65-67 on average. It hits a few highs up to 74.

I share walls with two neighbors, so don’t feel like I can really turn it up that loud....

If I listen in the morning then I prefer the level to be low or soft...betw. 59 and 72 dcb. Most of the time I prefer my music to be loud, as I love fully amplified music tracks. Typically I'll listen to my music at levels between 76 and 86 dcb. I won't go all the way out (I've been tempted to) because as long as I can hear the music at a level that I enjoy then that will be plenty of volume.
