Lola is a good album, but it never did for me what the "banned from America" trilogy did. I put it with Face and Muswell of really good Kinks albums.

So my guess is The Kick Inside by Kate Bush, in a gorgeous yellow and red splatter vinyl with a 7" with "Humming".

Oh crap, somebody had already guessed this one.

I keep hoping for a proper reissue of Time of the Last Persecution by Bill Fay, but Veedon Fleece would be great too.

Could be considered the most “esoteric” though, as very few people can personally relate to a concept album about disillusionment with the music business.

This is very off topic, but a couple semesters ago I took a course on music history, and the professor was fully convinced that VU were an entirely European band who had no connection to New York at all, and threatened to fail me if I kept arguing otherwise. That was when I realized that maybe college can be just as bullshit as everything else :p

Confirmed to not be Pink Floyd. Because, while we can have nice things, they can't be TOO nice ;)

Ha! I looked up multiple articles throughout the semester and her response was just "Well kiddo, ya can't believe everything you read on the internet, now can you?". She also refused to teach a two-week lesson plan on hip-hop because "It's just a bunch of criminals yelling about drugs and bitches over stolen music" so maybe some people just shouldn't ever teach?

On an opposite end of the crazy spectrum, I once had a white English lit teacher in high school who got his kicks from asking the white students to recite Public Enemy and NWA lyrics in class, complete with mandatory pronunciation of the N-word.

It is a small circle of people. You prove that again by saying serious music fan in the next paragraph. If you need to be a serious music fan to be into it it’s esoteric, particularly when every stickying pudding man and his dog owns Ziggy Stardust! Pitchfork, like NME or Rolling Stone or Melody Maker before it are aimed at “us”, not at everyone else!

I like the Veedon Fleece guess, but I have to quibble with one aspect of how it fits with the clues.

@Storf said while the artist made one of the albums that "many, many people say is the best of all time" (presumably this would be Astral Weeks if indeed the artist in question is Van), the ROTM is "weirder and more esoteric than what people know".

I think we've already covered how "esoteric" is open to more than one interpretation, but is anyone here prepared to make the case that Veedon Fleece is "weirder" than Astral Weeks?

Hmmm, fair point. "Linden Arden..." through "You Don't Pull No Punches..." are fairly weird, lyrically. Then again, there's a fair number of stream-of-consciousness Van songs that get weird like that.

Maybe the key part of Storf's clue there is "than what people know". Most people know the Van songs that were fairly big hits and got radio play. Veedon Fleece is certainly weirder than that stuff.

Yeah, I considered that. But if you read it all together it’s hard not to connect the “many, many” people who think AW is the best album ever to the “most” people who know less-weird Van joints than VF. And in any event, even if we’re not comparing it to Astral Weeks I’d have a hard time describing Veedon Fleece as “weird” in any sense.

"Joe Six-pack won't know it or dig it" is literally the definition of esoteric.

Joe Six Pack wouldn’t know Astral Weeks and that’s universally considered one of the greatest albums of all time.
